To many in America, diabetes has for years, been a truly scary possibility. About one in 15 people in America has it. More and more though, our pets, are beginning to show a human tendency for diabetes as well. And for treating pet cats and dogs with diabetes, veterinarians have no option but to use the tools that have been developed for the treatment of diabetes in humans. Veterinarians have used human medicines for cats and dogs with diabetes for a very long time now. There would be nothing newsworthy over there. What's different in the way veterinarians choose to treat pet diabetes now is that they've brought in the continuous glucose monitor as well to help pet owners make sure that their pets are getting timely treatment. The continuous glucose monitor is a device that a surgeon implants under the skin. The device is constantly in contact with the blood of the host and can put out glucose readings in real time. These devices could be very important to the survival of the pet with diabetes. A person with diabetes, if he doesn't feel too well, feels a great deal thirst; they go to the toilet all the time and feel tired. These can actually tell the doctor how the patient feels so that he can understand that there is a high blood sugar problem that the person is struggling with. Since a pets can't really complain, an automated full-time monitor might be of considerable use. If diabetes is left untreated, it can end up in kidney failure or even blindness. Before continuous glucose monitors came along, doctors would keep dogs with diabetes right there in the clinic for a whole day and test their blood from time to time to try to form an idea of the kind of blood sugar levels the dog had through every hour of the day. They would use this as a way to prescribe insulin supplements. The problem is, a dog sitting it in a clinic all day isn't a happy animal. And that changes the way its insulin levels show. A continuous monitor that allows an animal to live in its home happy and unmolested makes for better quality readings. It's been quite a revolution in the way pets are treated for diabetes. For dogs as well as cats, diabetic diagnoses have been going through the roof. About 40 years ago, only 2 out of every 1000 pets that was brought to any hospital, came in for diabetes. Today, that number has jumped to six times as many. There are certain kinds of dogs that are the most at risk for diabetes. Miniature schnauzers, bichon frises and Alaskan malamutes are breeds that happen to be particularly at risk.

Make sure you take your existing pet into consideration before deciding to adopt a new one. Your new pet needs to have a temperament that matches those of your existing pets. Having a regular feeding schedule makes house training much easier by putting their elimination needs on a schedule as well. Get your dog the proper nutrition required for canine health. It is entirely up to you to provide a good diet for your pet. Without proper nutrition, your dog can suffer both physically and behaviorally. A proper diet can affect how well they react to training. Everyone in the family should use the exact same commands when training your dog. Avoid confusion when it comes to disciplining your dog; keep command words consistent throughout the household. The more consistency that your dog deals with, the better it's chances of being properly trained. Taking an obedience class will help you train your puppy properly. The trained instructors can help your pup with any issues he may have, including unnecessary barking, chewing, house training and normal obedience issues. If you notice a sudden change in your dog's behavior, take him to a vet. Some medical problems can cause pain or behaviors that cause them to act in ways that they wouldn't normally do. The way dogs learn is by repeating techniques and being rewarded. First, you must completely walk the dog through what you want to accomplish, and then set up a daily routine around the behavior that includes rewards. There is not another way to teach something to a dog. Repetition with rewards is the only way to properly train a dog. During your training program, keep your dog interested by using many different types of treats. Make the training treats extra special so they won't confuse them with normal treats. Making the treats special and unusual will help your dog obey your commands faster. They understand they are getting something special and will work harder for it. Training your dog will be a rewarding experience for you both if it is approached with motivation and a positive mental attitude. Positive reinforcement will ensure your dog picks up on what they have done correctly, and encourage them to continue doing it through the future. Using a negative form of training or punishment only alienates the dog, and makes him afraid of you. These tips will surely help you to enjoy the pleasures of a happy, well-trained dog. A well trained dog leads to a better relationship. Felines make wonderful family pets as your veterinarian Mount Pleasant can testify to. They're adorable, quiet and also you don’t need to bother about them chasing after a vehicle lower the road. Mount Pleasant Mayor Billy Swails recently presented an award to Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital. The award was from the Mayor and the Town Council in appreciation of over 50 years in business and continual contribution to the Mount Pleasant business community. Receiving the award were Dr. Kevin Shuler and retired Dr. KC Shuler. The 50 years started when the late Dr. J.O. Shuler opened Mount Pleasant Animal Hospital in 1959. MPAH was the first full time veterinary hospital in the town of Mt. Pleasant. It had the first X-ray machine “East of the Cooper” and was used in emergencies for both people and pets. In 1968 Kenneth (K.C.) Shuler joined his uncle J.O. in practice. KC’s son Kevin and his wife Laura joined the practice following their graduations from Veterinary School and took the helm after Dr. K.C. retired in 2005.

Just a quick note to clear up something. We do not exclusively provide service to just Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. We also provide full service veterinary service to the entire East Cooper area, Charleston, Awendaw and other local areas. Many of our customers are from Isle of Palms, SC, Sullivan's Island, SC, and Awendaw. We also see many clients that bring their pets while vacationing in the area.
